Έ DAY! Every March 14, mathematicians, scientists, and math lovers around the world celebrate Pi Day, a commemoration of the infinitely long, never-ending number and the mathematical sign Ο. Fun fact: Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Albert Einstein was born on Pi Day, March 14, 1879. Time to carve out a slice of the cosmos! It sounds impressive, but we asked a mathematician why we should care. The endless number has been useful, puzzling, and an obsession. "Squaring the circle," or constructing a square with the same area as a given circle with just a compass and a straightedge, is harder than it seems. New examples of the famous numbers don't appear every day. The characteristics that make up mother-of-pearl are surprisingly tougher than they seem. |
