The Story We Can't Stop Thinking About

Out-of-Body Dreams. A near-death experience, or NDE, is a close brush with death. Of those who undergo a life-threatening medical emergency, a staggering one-fifth of those patients report a near-death experience. Two new studies suggest they can even cause long-term effects on sleep. The researchers found that people who have confronted NDEs can more easily remember their dreams and experience them more vividly and lucidly than the average person; some NDE survivors even report precognitive (or “past-life”) dreams. These unusual states of consciousness are still a mystery—but it does seem that those who have come closest to death walk away with wholly new perceptions of reality.
