Researchers have uncovered a massive reservoir of magma buried miles beneath the Italian region, rivaling some of the largest volcanic systems on Earth. The good news is it’s so thick and sluggish that an eruption is unlikely to happen anytime soon. But it doesn’t feel great that some of the planet’s most powerful forces can secretly sit beneath some of the most unlikely places.
