Fast-forwarding the future. There's an underground machine in China called CHIEF1900 that's spinning built-to-scale bridges and dams at thousands of times Earth's gravity to see how they might fail thousands of years from now. This hypergravity centrifuge can generate up to 1,900 G-tons, basically compressing time to simulate everything from earthquakes to the crushing forces inside stars. What could it show us next?
This summer the U.S. Department of Energy warned that blackouts could increase 100-fold by 2030. Unfortunately, we're actively making the problem worse.
