Barbecue sauce is ketchup's cooler, older sibling. Most recipes start with a cup or two of ketchup, followed by splashes of cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, a drizzle of honey, and a few teaspoons of your favorite barbecue spices. It all simmers on the stove to marry the flavors before you begin to baste and smother everything over the grill. With grilling and barbecue season hitting its stride, we wanted to share our recipe notes with you.

World's Fair Barbecue Sauce

Tangy and slightly sweet, this sauce recipe is perfect for pulled pork or smoked chicken. We season this recipe with our World's Fair Barbecue Rub, but you can try experimenting with any of our barbecue spice blends.

Favorite BBQ Blends

World's Fair Barbecue Rub
This blend commemorates the 1893 World's Fair, when the world came to Chicago. Our World's Fair Barbecue Rub livens up chicken, burgers, tofu, or pork chops with a unique blend of French shallots, Hawaiian sea salt, cane sugar, Thai chili peppers, Hungarian paprika, Indian peppercorns, English mustard, West African grains of paradise, and Moroccan coriander.
Brisket of Love Barbecue Rub
A Spice House manager created this sumptuous blend as a parting gift for guests at his barbecue-inspired wedding. It is sweet and tangy with a peppery bite, perfect for slow-smoked brisket. Use this blend to add some kick to your Shabbat dinner, corned beef, or homemade pastrami. Don't stop with brisket. This blend is delicious on chicken, pork, and even fish.

West Indies Salt-Free Barbecue Rub
This island-inflected rub is a mix of allspice, cayenne, and cinnamon. It's a Spice House favorite for pork shoulder, baby back ribs, and beer can chicken. This West Indies Salt-Free Barbecue Rub is perfect for Caribbean spit-roasted goat, but is equally delicious on grilled hamburgers, smoked turkey legs, or grilled corn on the cob.
Kansas City Barbecue Rub
Since the early 1900s, Kansas City has rubbed its meat with spices, then slowly smoked pork, lamb, chicken or burnt ends over a variety of wood fuels, then served it up with a thick, tomatoey sauce. Put this Kansas City Barbecue Rub on dry, combine with tomato puree or ketchup to make a sauce, or add to any Sloppy Joe recipe.
