This beer was brewed as a collaboration with Seattle's Suicide Squeeze records. It is packed with Mosaic® and Citra® hops.

OG = 1.044   FG = 1.008
IBU = 48   SRM = 6   ABV = 4.7%

8.4 lbs. (3.8 kg) 2-row pale malt
0.25 lb. (113 g) crystal malt (40 °L)
0.5 lb. (0.23 kg) flaked oats
2.8 AAU Mosaic™ hop pellets (60 min.) (0.25 oz./7 g at 11% alpha acids)

Quick Fermentations

Whenever I use a yeast starter I have overly active fermentation for about four days and then almost no fermentation at all. Is this normal?

To answer this question I will assume that you do not have a chilly
root cellar where you are fermenting lagers, and that most, if not all,
of your homebrews are ales. I will also assume that you are fermenting your brews in your house at about 72 °F (22 °C).

Calculate brewhouse efficiency

I have read a lot of articles that refer to brewhouse efficiency, but I haven't found anything showing how to calculate it. Have you?


The easiest way to calculate brewhouse efficiency is to go metric! You need four pieces of information to perform this straightforward calculation. The data you need is: post boil wort volume in liters (there are 3.785 liters per gallon), post boil specific gravity (for example, 1.056 kg/L), post boil wort density in ºPlato (to approximate, divide the number behind the decimal of the specific gravity by four — e.g. 56/4 = 14 ºPlato) and the weight of grains used in recipe (in kg).
