What is the fastest, easiest, and least expensive workbench that you can build? I asked myself that question recently and went to the lumberyard looking for inspiration. I was shocked by what I saw there. The lumber quality was poor and its cost was ridiculously high. Even a simple bench today is going to cost you some serious money. It seemed sensible to develop a design that uses as little lumber as possible.
A similar thought occurred to me two years ago, when I built a set of steps on the back of my house. After the project was complete, I was left with a handful of leftover pieces of pressure treated 2 x 12. That material was so expensive, it seemed crazy to heave the scraps into the trash. I thought about what I could make with so little lumber. Moving the pieces around in different positions on the garage floor, I realized that I had enough wood to make a small low bench. The design was accidental, but it was good. Two years later, I'm still using the bench as seating and happy with it. It's sturdy and tip-resistant. |
