Cigar Box Project: Make a DIY Florescent Rock Display

Empty cigar boxes make great enclosures for all kinds of projects. I've used them to make electric guitar amplifiers, Bluetooth speakers, and ukuleles. When my son discovered the wonder of fluorescent rocks and minerals, I realized cigar boxes were the perfect size for a portable black light display/inspection box. With a little searching on Amazon I found some battery powered black light LED kits which would make for a quick, easy project.

You'll need minimal materials and tools to build this project. You can pick up empty cigar boxes at most smoke shops for between $1-5, but if you don' have a local smoke shop, you can also find them on eBay. Get one at least 6-inches square on the inside, and about 3-inches tall. The black light LED kits, available on Amazon, come two to a package for $12. Beyond that you'll need just a couple other materials and tools listed in this article.
